Ichiro’s Malt Chichibu On The Way 2024 is the fourth release in this series of single malt whiskies from Chichibu in Japan. This series shows a snapshot of the current whisky style at the distillery whilst they are “on the way” to an ongoing ten-year-old release.
This single malt whisky is made from barley that has been 100% floor-malted at the Chichibu distillery in Japan. This technique has largely been replaced by more efficient means of malting due to the amount of manual labour and skill involved; however, some distilleries believe that the artistry in floor malting produces a more rich and nuanced spirit akin to the whiskies seen in the early 20th century.
This whisky has bright and elegant notes of kumquat, peach, and sweet vanilla, with a touch of honey and citrus peel. On the palate is a richness from the barley along with a creamy character, displaying hints of ripe peach and plum. The finish is long and elegant with plum and biscuit characters, ending with orchard fruits.
