Description

100% Tinto de Toro, 15%abv

Pintia at its most refined and vibrant, a standout in the estate’s recent history.

Pintia is focused on producing a modern, highly expressive Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). The wine’s foundation lies in the challenging Toro terroir: vines rooted in poor, stony, sandy soils, enduring low rainfall and pronounced temperature contrasts. This challenging environment concentrates the fruit and demands meticulous vineyard management to achieve optimal balance and finesse.

The 2021 vintage is defined by a distinct fresh, vertical expression resulting from an exceptional and well-balanced growing season.

Precision is central to the Pintia process. Harvest is conducted strictly by hand, with fruit immediately transferred to a cold chamber for 12 hours to preserve aromatic intensity. Quality control is rigorous, featuring a double sorting table to ensure only the finest berries are used. The subsequent process includes five days of cold maceration prior to fermentation in oak wood vats.
Both primary fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place 100% in wood. The wine is subsequently aged for 11 months in a combination of oak and amphorae, followed by 30 months of maturation in bottle before release.

The Vintage
An exceptional year at Pintia, thanks to evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year, and absence of adverse weather. A mild winter, a warm spring and ideal conditions during flowering. Gentle summer temperatures and sufficient water reserves kept the vines fresh throughout the season. The harvest took place between 11th September and 4th October.

The current release is the 2021 Pintia, for them an exceptional vintage in Toro, one of their finest to date. It was cropped from a cooler year when the wine has more freshness despite the 15% alcohol, with a pH of 3.83 and 4.7 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats and matured partly in stainless steel (15%), barrels and foudres with 75% new oak, for 11 months. Three episodes of rain in September really made the vintage, something unusual in the zone, putting the icing on the cake of a cooler year. The wine is always more powerful than the wines from Ribera or Rioja, with more oomph, density and abundant tannins but with very good balance and freshness. It's a Pintia for the long haul, like a 2018 with more weight. There were 235,355 bottles, 13,944 half-bottles, 6,535 magnums and some larger formats produced. This was bottled in April 2023.

Excellent and refined, showing deep, fresh blackberries with tar, dark minerals, cocoa powder and roasted spices. Full-bodied with tight but fine-grained tannins. Lasting well in the finish. Drink from 2027.

JANCIS ROBINSON 17.5/20
The wine is outstanding. Pintia 2021 retains its trademark power and density, yet feels more ‘al dente’ than previous vintages – opulent but crunchier in its fruit profile. It shows sweet, polished tannins, controlled power, a compact but layered texture and beautifully integrated toasted notes. Plum, warm stone and hints of wilted violet add complexity. Easily one of the most harmonious and well-tempered Pintia releases of recent years – no small statement. (FC)
