Description

Madiran is a glorious hidden corner of south west France with lush, rolling hillsides and glimpses of the snow peaked high Pyrenees around every corner. Situated just over an hour’s drive from Bordeaux, it is pretty accessible and deserves greater recognition. It has long been a favourite personal playground with delicious regional cuisine to pair with the special local wines. On a recent buying adventure we visited seven different Madiran properties and there was a clear winner. Château Peyros has been owned by the Lesgourgues family since 1999 and there has been significant investment in the vineyards and the cellar. There are seventeen hectares of vines, mainly planted with Tannat, together with some Cabernet Franc. The soils are silty clay and full of large stones deposited by mountain glaciers (Peyros means stony in Gascon). Sustainable practices are a priority and both Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3 and Terra Vitis certifications have been achieved. The wines are silky and stylish with deep texture and tannins from the Tannat, balanced with the floral notes and delicacy from the Cabernet Franc.

Deep and intense ruby-red colour. The nose is fully-expressive, with black fruits, typical of Tannat. Round on the palate, unctuous and supple. The wine reveals subtle notes of cherry with a great freshness and a length on the palate. Silky and stylish. The deep texture and tannins from the Tannat are beautifully balanced with the floral notes and delicacy from the Cabernet Franc.

To pair with roasted meat (lamb, beef) or or slightly spicy tartars. A cuvée which reveals the full potential of Madiran appellation. Agre from 10 to 15 years.
