"100% Piekenierskloof Grenache Noir - Familiemoord - a wine about the extraordinary but true story of how the police thought I killed my son and buried him in a shallow grave in the vacant property next to our house. The Cape Argus' article on 11 May 2013 about the incident titled “The mystery of the boy in the sandpit” serves as this wine’s label.

Familiemoord 2025 - since the first vintage in 2013, this is the best vintage nature has given me in my winemaking career! A benchmark vintage for me.

This wine is a 100% Grenache Noir from the Piekenierskloof mountains. The 2025 differs slightly from the 2023. The change? We brought in another neighbouring vineyard - an even older one! Small bush-vines planted in weathered sandstone.

So comparing the 2 vintages, I would say the 2025 is a bit more refined with more finesse and perfume. The 2023 is more grungy / cured meaty in comparison - more like a wine made in Southern France, than in South Africa."

Winemaking: The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness and cooled overnight to 4 degrees Celsius. The next morning, the grapes were destemmed and crushed into an open-top fermenter. As the tank filled, we removed/pumped the free-run juice into another tank. We drain all the juice we can until we are left with only skins and pulp. The skins and pulp underwent spontaneous fermentation and stayed on the skins for as long as possible. Pressed into older French oak small barrels, 10 months in barrel, blended and bottled.
