We are happy to share that the 2023 vintage of Elena Walch’s legendary Beyond the Clouds has received Gold (95 points) from Decanter and a further 99 points from Luca Maroni!

First released with the landmark 2000 vintage, Beyond the Clouds was Alto Adige’s first white "super cuvée". The concept was to select the very best parcels from Elena Walch’s estate vineyards, including the iconic monopoles Vigna Castel Ringberg and Vigna Kastelaz, and create a wine that represents the finest expression of each vintage.

A SIGNATURE STYLE
Part of the wine’s enduring appeal is the element of mystery. While Chardonnay always makes up most of the blend (typically 80%), the remaining varieties and their proportions are never disclosed and change from year to year, depending on the quality of each parcel. After fermentation, the wine is fermented and aged in French oak barriques, adding texture and complexity while remaining beautifully integrated.

The Advantage of Altitude
2023 turned out to be an excellent vintage that favoured higher-altitude vineyards, like those of Elena Walch’s. Following a challenging growing season, the estate had a fantastic harvest season with extra hang time for the grapes. The vintage generally produced fresher and more aromatic white wines with moderate alcohol and bright acidity compared to the richer 2022s. Chardonnay performed particularly well.

DISCOVER THE PRODUCER
A successful architect, Elena Walch married into one of the oldest winemaking families in Alto Adige in the 1980s. Her first vintage under her own name was in 1988, when she became the mountain region's first female winemaker. She went on to achieve international acclaim, with her daughters, Julia and Karoline, now working alongside her. The pioneering winemaker owns some of the finest vineyards in Italy, including two monopoles: Castel Ringberg in Caldaro and Kastelaz in Tramin, both situated at an altitude of 300–400 metres. These are officially recognised with the prestigious geographical designation “Vigna”.
