Description
IN BRIEF
Chateau Talbot 2005 is a generous, beautifully balanced Saint Julien showing ripe power and Saint Julien finesse. Deep garnet with an orange rim, it offers blackcurrant, blackberry and plum compote with violet and a redcurrant lift, then cedar, cigar box, pencil lead and olive tapenade. Full bodied with ripe, rounded tannins and bright acidity, the palate shows black cherry, damson and savoury black olive, with leather, forest floor and tobacco emerging on the mid palate; discreet oak brings clove and dark chocolate while a graphite mineral thread adds precision. Drinking very well now with decanting yet will evolve further. Drink 2026 to 2036. Pair with roast beef, lamb or venison. Critics: Decanter 94 "Balanced and elegant"; James Suckling 93 "Silky"; Wine Enthusiast 93 "Generous."
ABOUT THIS WINE
Chateau Talbot 4eme Grand Cru Classe Saint Julien 2005 is a consummate example of a warm, celebrated vintage that brings together opulent fruit, ripe tannic structure and the classically savoury Pauillac profile tempered by Saint Julien finesse. The colour is a deep garnet with orange tinges at the rim, signalling mature development while retaining depth. The nose is richly layered, opening with intense blackcurrant, blackberry and plum compote, underpinned by fragrant violet and subtle redcurrant lift. With airing the bouquet becomes more complex, revealing cedar chest, cigar box and polished pencil lead, alongside savoury notes of olive tapenade, cured meat and leather. Hints of spice, clove and dark chocolate from well integrated oak add further nuance.
On the palate the 2005 displays full bodied power allied to a refined textural seam. Generous dark fruit occupies the core, evolving into black cherry, damson and a savoury black olive character that speaks to the estate’s terroir. The tannins are ripe and substantial but have softened with age into a rounded, supportive frame that still provides backbone and length. Bright acidity cuts through the richness and lends lift, while a cool mineral and graphite thread extends the finish and brings precision to the wine’s broad architecture. Secondary notes of leather, forest floor and tobacco leaf continue to develop on the mid palate, adding complexity rather than weight.
The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded for producing wines of concentration and excellent balance, with warm ripening that yielded ripe phenolics together with sufficient acidity to secure longevity. At Talbot this translated into a wine of generosity that has aged into a harmonious, layered expression.
This bottle is drinking very well now but will continue to show subtle evolution over the short to medium term. Drink 2026 to 2036, peaking 2026 to 2032. Serve with roast or braised beef, lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison loin, beef Wellington or mature hard cheeses. Dense stews and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles will also complement the wine’s savoury complexity and ripe dark fruit.
DECANTER 94 points
Drinking Window: 2018 - 2032 - Once again the 2005 vintage works its magic, and this is a standout wine. Menthol and fresh mint leaf notes are set against liquorice and cassis, with beautifully integrated tannins that retain their bite. It's an absolutely delicious wine full of St-Julien balance and elegance, but also with real depth and concentration. Château Talbot is still a classic rather than an overly powerful St-Julien, even in this vintage. Aged in 50% new oak. - Tasted by: Jane Anson (at Château Talbot, 14 Dec 2017) Part of Anson: Tasting 100 years of Château Talbot wines

Complex aromas of chocolate, currants, berries and sweet tobacco. Full body with fully integrated tannins that give a silky texture. Lovely tannins, fruit and acid balance. Just opening now. Drink or hold.

ABOUT CHATEAU TALBOT
Château Talbot is a respected Fourth Growth from the 1855 Classification, located in the Saint Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s left bank. The estate is recognised for producing wines that combine classical structure with aromatic clarity, typically showing Cabernet Sauvignon driven power balanced by Merlot suppleness. Talbot’s position on deep gravel soils contributes to ripe concentration, fine tannins and a discernible mineral thread.
The property is owned by the Cordier family through their holding company, whose stewardship has overseen significant investment in vineyard renewal, cellar technology and long term quality initiatives. The family ownership encourages a coherent vision that balances respect for tradition with measured technical progress. Management focus has been on improving parcel definition and enhancing vineyard health to reflect site identity more precisely in the wines.
Vineyards extend to around 100 hectares and are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vine age varies across the holdings, from mature, low yielding plots to younger vines introduced through replanting programmes. Viticultural practice stresses canopy management, yield control and selective hand harvesting to secure physiological ripeness and maintain natural acidity. Increasing attention to soil health, cover cropping and sustainable practices has been applied to preserve long term vigour and terroir expression.
Winemaking is directed by an experienced technical team under the estate director, aided by a technical director and cellar staff who manage parcel by parcel vinification. The cellar regimen includes meticulous sorting, temperature managed fermentations and measured extraction to build structure while retaining aromatic definition. Ageing is undertaken in French oak, with barrel selection tailored to support rather than overwhelm fruit character. Regular blending trials and sensory evaluation guide the final assemblage for the grand vin and for the second wine.
In style Château Talbot typically exhibits blackcurrant, plum, cedar and graphite notes, often accompanied by tobacco leaf and a saline mineral undertow. The wines show firm yet refined tannins and the capacity to age gracefully, making Talbot a reliable example of Saint Julien balance and longevity.
