Description
Dominio de Pingus is the project of Bordeaux trained Peter Sisseck who firmly believed Ribera del Duero, still unknown in the 1990s, had great potential for winemaking. Peter searched for parcels of old vines with great exposition and encouraged local independent growers to drop chemicals, lower their yields and embrace biodynamic practices. A few years later, Cult Wine Pingus was born, putting Ribera del Duero on the map.
PSI 2022 is a blend red wine sourced from a collection of small, old-vine parcels scattered across Ribera del Duero. The vineyard boasts vines that average over 50 years old, with some reaching a century. This vintage features a composition primarily of Tempranillo, with traces of Garnacha and other local varieties. PSI is produced by the team behind the renowned Alión, highlighting a commitment to quality and traditional practices.
94 Points Robert Parker
The bottled 2022 PSI follows the character of the sample I tasted last year. It's clean, expressive and open. It's perfumed, elegant, floral and quite attractive and does not transmit any heat. In fact, it has contained ripeness and around 13.8% alcohol. They have improved the selection tremendously, and the wine has gained in precision; it`s better each year. There is something that reminds me of the old vintages of Pesquera (1994 and before), with notes of orange peel and aromatic herbs. It’s medium-bodied, has fine tannins and very good freshness. Only 20% of the volume matured in barrel, and the rest in large oak vats (2,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-litre ones), and the élevage is quite respectful of the wine. This should be readily available, as they produced 360,000 bottles in 2022. It’s detailed and hand-crafted, real wine in good volume, coming from 700 plots of old vines, all in all around 8% Garnacha. Despite the conditions of the year, this has to be one of the finest vintages of PSI.

Perfect with Lamb Shanks...
Slow-roast shoulder of lamb or lamb shank is a fattier, bursting with flavour dish and will demand a robust wine that has a greater balance of tannins, fresh acidity and a developed flavour, ideally with a little bottle age to draw out the flavours of the meat.
Wines from the Southern Rhône (Grenache based) like Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas will seal the flavours fantastically but a good Cote du Rhône will tick the boxes also. There are some lovely examples of Grenache and Grenache-blends (often called GSM) made in Australia worth exploring. A slightly gamey Spanish red from Ribera del Duero is an excellent choice too. We would highly recommend this darkly spiced and deep fruited wine from Peter Sisseck’s Bodegas Y Vinedos.
