Hamilton Russell’s Ashbourne Pinotage comes from the cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The 2020 vintage is grown on stony, clay-rich soils, which give the wine a more structured character compared to many other South African Pinotages. It is aged in French oak barrels to add depth while keeping the focus on the fruit.
It has a dark colour and offers clear flavours of black cherries, plums, and a hint of savoury spice. Because of the cooler climate, the wine maintains a fresh acidity and firm tannins, providing a balanced profile. It is a medium-to-full-bodied red that moves away from the traditional smoky style, focusing instead on a clean finish. It pairs well with game or roasted meats and reflects its coastal origin.
