Description
The Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2013 is a prestige vintage Champagne produced exclusively from grapes grown in Grand Cru vineyards that were under vine during Churchill's lifetime. The exact grape composition is a closely guarded family secret, but the blend is deliberately dominated by Pinot Noir to provide structure and breadth, supported by a smaller proportion of Chardonnay for acidity and balance. This formulation replicates the robust style favoured by Churchill.
The 2013 growing season was characterised by a cold, wet spring followed by a warm summer, resulting in a late October harvest. The wine undergoes primary fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by full malolactic fermentation, and is aged in Pol Roger’s deep, cold cellars before release.
Upon pouring, it displays a deep golden colour with a fine, persistent effervescence. The initial aromas include white flowers and citrus, which develop into richer notes of toasted almonds, pastry, and dried apricot. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated. It delivers flavours of ripe stone fruits and subtle spices, underpinned by a firm acidic structure that provides a long, clean finish. This Champagne pairs effectively with substantial dishes, including turbot, roasted capon, or aged Parmesan cheese.
