The 2023 Kanonkop Paul Sauer was released on 1st July with the first shipment due in Jersey end of October 2026.

This wine was made in the traditional Kanonkop style, grapes were fermented in open concrete fermenters for five days at 28°C, with manual punch-downs every two hours. Thereafter, the components are blended into the final wine, 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. The blend then spent 24 months in 225L French oak barrels before bottling, followed by an additional year of bottle ageing. According to Kanonkop viticulturist Michael Malherbe, the growing conditions for this vintage reminded him of the stunning 1997 vintage, which, despite its 29-year age, is drinking marvellously.

TASTING NOTES
Deep ruby red colour. A classic, perfumed nose packed with youthful red berries, blackcurrant and vibrant cherry, layered with pencil shavings, fresh cedar wood and delicate floral notes. As the wine opens, subtle toastiness emerges alongside an intriguing, wild, fynbos character and notes of lavender and saltbush. The palate is refined with linear tannins providing structure and balance. A complex, multi-layered wine with a beautiful structure, balanced acidity, and a long, fresh finish.

The 2023 Paul Sauer shows a cool, tight, broody aromatics with intricate top notes of violets, black currant leaf, black cherry, blue berries, fynbos and subtle saline maritime notes with the oak still playing a background role even at this youthful stage. The palate is silky soft on entry, incredibly cool, strict, and focused with a fantastically fresh taut acid back bone together with a lovely ‘low pH’ feel, the fruits bristling with energy and a weightless, crystalline intensity. Very classical in the true sense of Paul Sauer vintages but undeniable elegant and incredibly polished. True die hard Kanonkop collectors are going to absolutely love this new release!
