We’re pleased to offer a fresh selection of wines from Rockford Estate in Barossa. We’re generally about a year behind the estate when collecting Rockford, which means the wines have a useful amount of bottle age by the time they reach us and are ready to drink. Most of the reds are now 5–6 years old, which is a particularly good point in their development.

Robert O’Callaghan established Rockford Wines in the 1980s, with a focus on traditional winemaking methods. The winery uses equipment dating back to the late 19th century, including an 1890s basket press, and much of the production remains labour-intensive and hands-on. Despite coming from the Barossa, Rockford’s reds tend to be relatively light and elegant, with less extraction than many wines from the region.

All of the reds are destemmed in the 1880s Bagshaw crusher, pressed in the 1890s basket press and then matured for 24 months in seasoned French and American hogshead barrels.

The 2020 vintage followed two years of drought, resulting in small berries with concentrated flavours and a significantly reduced crop. The conditions also contributed to higher acidity, giving the wine plenty of freshness alongside the concentration. With such limited production, we had to work hard to secure our allocation, so we’re very pleased to be able to offer it. Basket Press is one of Australia’s benchmark Shirazes and a wine that deserves a place in any serious, well-rounded collection.

Taste profile: Deep garnet colour. Opens with an earthy nose that broadens to include underlying notes of espresso, dark chocolate, nuts and a hint of blackberry preserve. The medium-bodied palate has a firm structure, chewy tannins and a crisp acidity. Impressive length too. All of this supports a ripe concentration of red berry fruit, earthy and mocha flavours that close with a pleasant muscular fruit and dried herb finish. Great with pork and charcuterie.

2022 Moppa Springs Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro
If you’re new to Rockford, the Moppa Springs GSM is a good place to start. It’s the lightest bodied of the Rockford reds, with wild strawberry, dried herbs and white pepper aromas. The fruit is forked into our 1880’s wooden Bagshaw de-stemmer before fermenting in open slate tanks. Our 1890’s Robinson Basket Press slowly squeezes the remaining juice from the grapes, before the individual components are left to mature in seasoned oak casks. When the final blend comes together, layers of soft, savoury, spicy flavours are emerging and will continue to develop with a handful more years in bottle.
