Description
“One of the Barossa's classics, Rockford holds a special place in Australian wine lore…” - Wine Advocate
We’re pleased to offer a fresh selection of wines from Rockford Estate in Barossa. We’re generally about a year behind the estate when collecting Rockford, which means the wines have a useful amount of bottle age by the time they reach us and are ready to drink. Most of the reds are now 5–6 years old, which is a particularly good point in their development.
Robert O’Callaghan established Rockford Wines in the 1980s, with a focus on traditional winemaking methods. The winery uses equipment dating back to the late 19th century, including an 1890s basket press, and much of the production remains labour-intensive and hands-on. Despite coming from the Barossa, Rockford’s reds tend to be relatively light and elegant, with less extraction than many wines from the region.
All of the reds are destemmed in the 1880s Bagshaw crusher, pressed in the 1890s basket press and then matured for 24 months in seasoned French and American hogshead barrels.
2021 Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon
The Rockford Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is a tribute to the rich history and heritage of the Barossa Valley, particularly the area around Rifle Range Road, which runs parallel to Krondorf Road. This road, historically known for its connection to small-bore target shooting, represents the heart of Barossa’s early social life. Although the old rifle range is long gone, the vineyards and farmlands that once supported this community continue to thrive today.
Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced primarily from vineyards adjacent to Rifle Range Road, this wine reflects the unique terroir of the valley floor and the surrounding hills. Widely considered one of Australia's best, this is a very fine example from a stellar vintage, with fine tannins, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, tobacco and a touch of mint. It has the structure to develop further, but with the bottle age it has already picked up so there’s no need to wait.
