Description

Château Capbern, a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, has consistently delivered excellent quality and value from its Saint-Estèphe vineyards, benefitting from recent investment by the team behind Château Calon Ségur. The 2015 vintage in Bordeaux was highly celebrated, marked by a hot, dry summer and timely September rains that resulted in beautifully ripe, concentrated fruit with excellent structure.

Comprising 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine offers an inviting aroma of ripe blackcurrant, cedar, and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, it delivers a concentrated and full bodied experience; firm, integrated tannins support juicy dark fruit and savoury spice. The finish is long and structured, echoing dark fruit and a classic Saint-Estèphe minerality, highlighting its excellent ageing potential.

A Deeper Dive;

Chateau Capbern

The origins of this Saint-Estèphe based estate go back to the XVIIIth century, out of a wedding between the Rivière and Capbern families, and then Capbern and Gasqueton. A few years later, in 1894, the Capbern-Gasqueton purchase a certain… Calon Ségur! Generations succeeded to each other at the head of these two mythical crus of Saint-Estèphe until 2011, which marks the passing of Denise Gasqueton, last owner carrying that name. It is then that Suravenir purchases these estates and blows a new dynamic, with the respect of the history.

Capbern’s terroir features an extraordinary qualitative breeding ground, in the proper nature of the soils. The soils, well exposed and slightly sloping, favor the perfect maturation of the berries and benefit from a good draining.

Under the same management as Calon Ségur, its sister estate, Capbern is benefiting from a gravity fed vat house of 37 vats, and an ageing cellar in which the wines are going to mature for 18 months.

JAMES SUCKLING - 92 Points

"This is structured and very linear with superfine and polished tannins. It’s full-bodied yet reserved and held back with such tension and focus. Full-bodied, fine and chewy on the finish. Better in 2020."

Drinking window: 2028 - 2045

"The 2015 Capbern has a thoroughly enjoyable, finely delineated and focused nose, with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and light sandalwood scents. The palate is medium-bodied and very sapid, with crisp tannins, decent length and impressive weight on the finish. It's a bit uncompromising but this should repay cellaring and deserves a higher score than I gave it before."
