Description

A historic estate of the Delon family for over three centuries, Château Potensac embodies the "Pure Médoc Style". It was the first property to obtain the title of "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel" in its appellation.

Located to the west of the commune of Ordonnac, the 60-hectare vineyard rests primarily on clay-gravel soils. It sits on the high grounds of the Northern Médoc, allowing optimal sun exposure of the grapes.

Over this mixed case the personality of Château Potensac is unmistakable: classic Médoc structure shaped by Cabernet backbone; dark, earthy fruit, and a saline, gravelly thread. Across vintages Potensac balances austerity and generosity, ripe blackcurrant and cassis wrapped in tobacco, cedar and forest-floor complexity, with firm, refining tannins and fresh acidity that carries each wine.

2006 has settled into a graceful mature cadence: leather, dried herbs, and cedar over softened black fruit, drinking with supple tertiary nuance. 2009 and 2010 represent the warm, opulent years; luscious black fruit, spice and toasted oak, broad mid-palate and polished but persistent tannins; they show highest early charm and decadence. 2015 and 2016 reveal the house’s modern precision: energetic cores, vivid dark fruit, graphite and mineral lift, and chalky tannins promising continued evolution. 2018 is the most generous: dense, ripe, spicy and concentrated, with an impressive finish that suggests long cellar potential.

Taken together the case maps Potensac’s continuum from youthful power to approachable maturity, illustrating a domaine that marries Médoc rigor with a plush, terroir-driven depth; wines built to age yet gratifying across stages of development. Serve with lamb, game, stews or aged cheeses; decant younger bottles to broaden aromatics and soften tannins gracefully before serving.
