Fattoria Le Pupille is synonymous with Morellino di Scansano and Elisabetta has been instrumental in placing this appellation on the map of wine lovers, producing excellent value Sangiovese and gaining global fame with the area's first Super Tuscan, Saffredi. Her children Clara and Ettore are now running the winery, and this second generation has created two incredible, innovative wines to add to this impressive range: Le Pupille, an amphora-aged Syrah, and Piemme, a unique Petit Manseng.

Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice.

This is really crunchy and juicy, with plums, sliced peaches and some fresh basil and lemongrass. It’s full and layered with terra cotta notes and open-grained tannins. Takes off on the palate. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Poggio Valente is dense and quite powerful in the glass. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and a kick of sweet oak are all amplified. I would cellar this for at least a year or two. There's plenty of depth here. Perhaps that will help all the elements to meld together a bit more fully. Time in the glass helps a lot, as Sangiovese notes become more pronounced as the wine opens. For now, Poggio Valente shows a lot of vintage 2022 ripeness, but I am cautiously optimistic about its prospects, given how well it develops with aeration.
