Description

Produced at the historic Castello di Argiano in the southern part of Montalcino, the Sesti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 'Phenomena' 2013 is stunning. Each vintage of 'Phenomena' features a unique label commemorating a significant astronomical event, reflecting the estate's deep connection to nature and the cosmos. The 2013 vintage, widely considered a classic and outstanding year in the region, allowed for the creation of a wine with breathtaking structure and elegance.

Aged for a full 60 months, primarily in large Slavonian oak botti, this Riserva opens with a beautifully complex and evolving bouquet. Aromas of dried cherries, crushed raspberries, and wild rose are seamlessly layered with savoury notes of saddle leather, undergrowth, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and impeccably balanced, exhibiting a profound depth of dark red fruit interlaced with refined, powdery tannins and a vibrant, refreshing acidity. The finish is remarkably persistent, echoing with earthy spice and mineral nuances.

Now entering its prime drinking window, this marvellous Brunello is a superb companion to roasted game, slow-braised wild boar, or aged Pecorino cheese. It promises continued graceful evolution for decades.

This wine carries its weight and intensity very nicely. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena delivers classic characteristics of Sangiovese grown in this unique appellation located in southern Tuscany. Bold cherry and cassis are followed by spice, smoke and scorched earth. In the mouth, this Riserva offers density, power and momentum. Thanks to that bright acidity, the wine should evolve well. Some 3,800 bottles were produced.

VINOUS 93
Drinking window: 2025 - 2033
The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena is dusty, spicy and slightly exotic, enticing with an array of clove, allspice, cedar shavings and mocha before giving way to dried black cherry tones. This smooths over the palate with silken textures and ripe red and black fruit, as hints of tobacco resonate toward the close. Finishing with medium length, it is surprisingly fresh, still a bit grippy and nearing perfect maturity.

Drinking Window: 2022 - 2032
Giuseppe Sesti and his daughter Elisa have been making some of the best wines in Montalcino from their organically tended vineyards in the hamlet of Argiano for years. Although the estate is in the southern, warmer part of the denomination, the wines always shine in elegance and fine tannic structure. This one is their best yet, with mouth-filling fruit pulled into shape by vibrant acidity, while maintaining its elegant constitution.
