Description
Located in the heart of the Vino Nobile zone, Tenuta Valdipiatta was purchased by Giulio Caporali in the late 1980s and is now run by his daughter, Miriam. To further elevate the winemaking, Miriam collaborated with top Bordeaux oenologist Eric Boissenot in 2010. The estate’s 22 planted hectares are dedicated primarily to Sangiovese, known locally as ‘Prugnolo Gentile’.
The vineyards for this wine sit between 300 and 350 metres above sea level, spanning the hillside with varying exposures. The vines - ranging from 25 to 60 years old - thrive on clayey-silty soils featuring deep layers of red sands and marls over a base of blue Pleistocene clays.
The 2021 vintage began with a rainy winter that replenished vital water reserves. Despite early April frosts, delayed budbreak minimised yield losses. A warm, dry summer with low disease pressure and a sunny September allowed the grapes to achieve excellent phenolic ripeness, resulting in remarkable aromatic intensity and structure.
Following a careful hand-harvest and sorting in late September, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled tanks with daily pump-overs and délestages for gentle extraction. After 20 to 21 days of skin contact and spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months - 75% in large Slavonian oak barrels and 25% in French oak tonneaux - before refining in bottle for a further 18 months.
Intense ruby red in colour, the nose boasts notes of black cherry, violets, and roses, alongside dark spices, tobacco, and black pepper. The palate is solid, deep, and full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, rich finish.
