Description
Samuel Billaud is a modern master of Chablis, renowned for his pragmatic, precise approach that delivers wines of exceptional aromatic purity and consistency. The 2024 vintage was challenging, with yields significantly reduced by May hailstorms and irregular flowering, yet meticulous vineyard management ensured fruit of superb quality. This 1er Cru Butteaux, sourced from a unique blue clay enclave within Montmains, was fermented in 500-litre oak barrels. It reveals an intense bouquet of citrus zest, white peach, and a profound stony minerality. On the palate, the wine displays remarkable power and concentration, beautifully balanced by a thrilling, saline acidity that defines the terroir. The finish is exceptionally long and focused, promising a rewarding evolution through to 2033.
INSIDE BURGUNDY Jasper Morris - 5 STARS / 92-95 points/100
"Escaping the hail, the 70+ year old vines came through with a good yield of 30 hl/ha. Pale in colour with a sensual grace to the nose, Butteaux always has a little more flesh than a classic Montmains. That suggestion of Right Bank. Then on the palate we come back to the Left Bank with this biting acidity easily covered by the fruit." Drink from 2029-2034. Tasted Jun 2025.
