Pieter Walser’s project is a perfect fit for the collection of authentic, terroir-driven wines we have been carefully building. Every one of Pieter’s wines tells its own story - one that isn't dictated by the grape variety, but by the liquid in the bottle. In his world, regional identity and varietals take a back seat, allowing site expression and hand-designed labels to take the wheel.
The Story Behind the "Blank" Label The journey began in 2004 when a customer told Pieter, “I don’t drink Shiraz.” He poured her a glass of wine which she loved so much she immediately bought three cases. It was, of course, a straight Shiraz. That was the moment Pieter realised how much we often judge a book by its cover. His response was to leave his labels blank of any varietal information, allowing the wine to speak entirely for itself.
From Garage Project to Cult Producer Blankbottle has grown from a small garage project into one of South Africa’s most respected producers, all while maintaining the instinct-driven spirit that defined it from the start. Pieter owns no vineyards; instead, he works with a network of 66 growers across the Western Cape, selecting fruit based on personality and site expression. His team covers thousands of kilometres each harvest in search of old-vine parcels and forgotten plots that carry real character.
In the Cellar The philosophy is low-intervention and highly intuitive, involving spontaneous fermentations across concrete eggs, amphorae, and oak. Every label is hand-designed by Pieter himself using woodcuts, lino prints, and pencil drawings. Each bottle even carries a QR code linking to a short film, bringing the story behind the wine to life.
South Africa is currently one of the most exciting regions in the wine world, and Blankbottle represents its most forward-thinking edge. We are delighted to bring these critically acclaimed, unmistakably unique wines to our customers here in Jersey.
